The Secret Life of Pets
Although this movie has already hit theaters in China, you can find DVDs of the lovable story in shops around Shanghai. Louis C.K. voices Max, an adorable terrier living large in Manhattan with a few other pet friends. However, he is driven to jealousy when his owner adopts a new dog called Duke (Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet). However, Max’s plot to rid the home of his new competitor leads to misadventures for the both of them, with the unlikely pair becoming lost on the streets desperately trying to make it home.
Arguably the world’s most popular comedian, Kevin Hart stars as a vengeful white rabbit and Saturday Night Live great Dana Carvey voices a wise basset hound that the two pets encounter while on the streets. Released last month, The Secret Life of Pets has been widely praised for mixing a family- friendly message with laughs designed for both kids and adults. It has already grossed over USD400 million worldwide and topped the Mainland box office upon its August 2 release.
Ice Age: Collision Course
Released on August 23 in theaters, the fifth installment in the pre-historic animated series literally goes to outer space. The film picks up after the events of 2012’s Ice Age: Continental Drift, where saber tooth squirrel Scrat has accidentally activated an alien ship taking him to deep space where he inadvertently sends several asteroids to collide into Earth. Meanwhile on the planet, Ray Romano’s woolly mammoth Manny must rally everyone around him to find a solution from impending doom.
Expect the usual mix of stunning animation and kid-friendly comic high jinks. Stars Dennis Leary, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Lopez return with new additions including comic favorites (Nick Offerman), pop stars (Jessie J), athletes (Michael Strahan) and a scientist (Neil deGrasse Tyson).
Star Trek Beyond
With a release date of September 2, this will thrill all you trekky families out there. The USS Enterprise is back with another out-of-this-world adventure. This time, the crew of the Enterprise goes on a five-year rescue mission in an uncharted nebula, but gets stranded as their ship is destroyed from an ambush by unknown aliens. Tired and frustrated, the crew then faces a new ruthless hateful enemy ready to destroy the Federation: Krall, played by the beloved Idris Elba.
Directed by Justin Lin of Fast & Furious, the new movie is packed with brilliant actions, and the screenplay, by none other than Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, adds depth to all the characters. All of these efforts come together in the movie to prove that, even after 50 years, the Star Trek franchise still has plenty to offer.
Storks
Ever told your kids the story about storks delivering babies? Well, apparently, it’s been a while since those storks have moved on to a new job—delivering packages for a global online retail giant Cornerstone.com. In their Stork Factory, Junior, the top delivery stock, accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, and struggles with his human friend to somehow complete their first-ever baby delivery before the boss finds out.
Starring household names such as Andy Samberg and Jennifer Aniston, this delightful animation is packed with solid jokes and will surely be a hit with both the parents and the children alike. This film is set to be released in China on September 23.
Unfortunately release dates for Gambit (an X-man series spin-off) and Lego Ninjago haven't been set for China yet, but their are rumors they will be making an appearance in Mainland theaters soon.
