In the wake of an accident which took the life of a six-year-old girl, a round of safety inspections on dressing mirrors has been ordered for the Cross Region Plaza of Xuhui District, where the tragedy took place, reports Shine.
On Saturday, December 8, when Yao and his family was shopping at I.T Outlet, his daughter was hit by a collapsing dressing mirror. Although immediately sent to a nearby hospital, the girl passed away shortly after.

Following the accident, the managers of both I.T Outlet and Cross Region Plaza have visited Yao to express their condolences. At the same time, they have agreed to Yao's preliminary requests which included assistance from a mental health professional for Yao's wife, who is currently seven months pregnant. To date, compensation has not been discussed. "I hope they will reach out to me soon," Yao told The Paper.
It is said the collapsing dressing mirror was three meters high and one meter wide. Weighing 50-60 kilograms the mirror is so heavy that it requires two adults to lift. According to the official statement released by I.T Outlet, the mirror should have been fixed to the wall. However, according to the reports of Kankanews, the mirror was simply leaning against the wall. For now, the emergency management department of Xuhui District has commenced the investigation, and the outlet will remain closed while it is in progress.

To avoid similar accidents from happening again, the Cross Region Plaza has sent a notice to all store managers requesting they conduct self-inspections on potential safety threats. That being said, unfixed dressing mirrors can still be spotted around the mall. In addition, some mirrors are merely held on by glue, which can begin to waiver with little force.

According to the Shanghai Consumer Council, facilities for business operations such as malls and restaurants have obligations to ensure the safety of customers. They have demanded the Foxtown Mall issue a public statement once the results are out. Meanwhile, a citywide order has been given to all the restaurants and malls in Shanghai to carry out safety checks and eradicate potential safety hazards.
