By now we have all enjoyed the cooler days following the official arrival of autumn. Apart from temperate weather and the sweet smell of osmanthus, the most enjoyable aspect of this vibrant season is walking on the gold and red 'carpet' made of fallen foliage. As usual, this year, to preserve the natural beauty, Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau has announced to keep fallen leaves on 29 streets around town, reports Shine.

Featuring tree species such as ginkgo, camphor, sweetgum and phoenix, the roads selected to keep the fallen leaves sit across 10 districts in Shanghai. Residents and tourists will have the chance to appreciate the scenery exclusive to autumn on streets such as Sinan Lu, Fuxing Lu, Wukang Lu and Siping Lu.

The event will run from mid-November to the yearend. The specific timings vary for each street and are subject to change, depending on the weather. On rainy or hazy days, for instance, the leaves will be cleared to secure the safety of pedestrians.

While the fallen leaves remain on streets, sanitation workers and volunteers will keep the roads clean by separating the garbage from the leaves. At the same time, the bureau has advocated civilians and sightseers not to litter on the streets and help retain the view.

It turns out that the idea of maintaining the fallen foliage was initiated by Xuhui district back in 2013, according to The Paper. Over the years, it has extended across the city and further enhanced by the launch of related activities, such as photographic contests. So, keep your eye out for the budding photographers out there, as they get creative with this years' sea of red and gold covering the city.
