A joint effort has been activated by Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui to tackle water pollution and protect drinking water sourced from the Yangtze River. While air pollution is more at the forefront of citizens’ concerns, water pollution is just as serious a threat, to include 'mislabeled' drinking water as we've recently seen.
Water issues, however, are more complicated than those regarding air, says Wang Qiang, deputy director of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau’s Policy and Regulation Division. It is not enough for one local government to make a plan; all areas affected by the water source must come together.
Environmental authorities in the aforementioned provinces will enhance communication among themselves to reach an agreed standard on water discharge in the region. They are also seeking support from the central government.
