At long last, Shanghai commuters can pay for the metro using WeChat payment, according to Kankanews.
The new function comes into effect from Monday, May 28, which means WeChat payment has become the third payment option eligible for Metro Daduhui app (Metro大都会) after Alipay and UnionPay.

To date, more than half of the Shanghai Metro’s turnstiles support QR code payments, and the convenience will extend to all turnstiles by the end of this year, as is planned by Shanghai Metro operators.
The Metro Daduhui app has been boosting metro user experience since its debut in January 2018. In early April, registration with foreign passports or Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan ID cards was launched, which increased availability to many more metro users around town.
“The statistics show that currently, 20 percent of passengers choose QR code payment to pass through the turnstiles. This new payment option has improved their ways of traveling around the city.” Zhu Limin, vice general manager of Shanghai Metro, advises to Kankanews.
May 28 will mark the 25th anniversary of Shanghai Metro. Line 1 of Shanghai Metro commenced operation in 1993. Back then, there were only five stations, amounting to a length of only 4 .4 kilometers. And now, the total length of the world’s longest metro network is expected to reach 707 kilometers following two additional lines opening this year.
