Wellington held its first major musical production in the College Theatre on 18th, 19th and 20th June, performing the Tony Award-winning musical, 'Pippin': one young man’s quest to become extraordinary.
Over the course of two hours, the cast told the story of Pippin, a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in his life. This captivating extravaganza addresses the themes of war, murder, magic and love, ending with Pippin struggling to decide whether he should settle down and pursue a peaceful life or continue to make magic with the dazzling troupe of performers. It was an unusual choice of musical and therefore, a memorable adventure for the cast and audience alike!
Directed by Michael Larsen-Disney, Wellington's Director of Performing Arts, 'Pippin' boasted an elaborate tiered stage, specially-tailored period costumes and an enthusiastic cast of 37 pupils from Year 6-11. Featuring the Shanghai Baroque Orchestra and a band of music tutors and pupils, Wellington's first musical showcased the diverse talents of the College's dancers, singers, instrumentalists and actors.
Michael Larsen-Disney praised the cast for 'rising magnificently to the challenge and working extremely diligently throughout the summer term. The end result was spectacular.' At the close of the final night, Founding Master, David Cook, delightedly said: 'The show was fabulous! This production has successfully placed Wellington's Performing Arts program as one of most ambitious in Shanghai. ’
