Shanghai parents who lose their only child are now able to receive preferential healthcare treatment and free emergency assistance from the city, the Shanghai Commission of Health and Family Planning recently announced.
The new program applies to childless couples holding a Shanghai hukou or residence permit, currently estimated at about 15,000 pairs.
Other benefits of the program include free accident insurance, domestic help, medicine delivery and preferential housing.
The program comes at a time when the country is dealing with a rapidly aging population, an unintended side effect of the now-defunct “One Child Policy.”
