For most Western females – and a fair few Western men – waxing has become a commonplace necessity. To keep our gardens neat and tidy, we rely on professionals to prune the foliage. But when you move to a country like China, where the people are less hirsute, it can be difficult to find a safe pair of hands that you trust to tend to the topiary.
While it’s not quite the phenomenon than it once was, waxing salons are still few and far between in Guangzhou, and we at That’s regularly get asked by readers where they should go for a spruce up. One place that has been running for four years now is Nail Culture. As the name suggests, they offer pedicures, manicures and other nail-related treatments, but also ply the waxing trade.
Using products by Depileve, a strip waxing system sold in 87 countries around the world, the salon targets all the essential spots: eyebrows (RMB80), legs (RMB350) and the pubic region – be it a sculpted bikini (RMB220) or an all-off Brazilian (RMB400). They also offer options for the chest (RMB280) and back (RMB350), catering to the foreign gent.
Everything you would expect from a hair removal experience is included in the price, from the warmed wax to the cooling post-treatment balm. A trip once a month is normally enough for maintenance, and repeat visits will eventually see your hair getting softer when it grows out.
Nail Culture already has four branches in the city, the newest one opening a few months ago on Huasui Lu. The decor varies depending on which outlet you select – be it in the Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons or the Sinopec Building – though all pay close attention to hygiene. A clear bilingual menu explains the options and all staff speak a smattering of English.
