Co-organized by the Israel General Consulate Guangzhou and Redtory Culture & Art Organization, Imagined Landscape depicts the country of Israel as seen in the mind of artist Aharon Gluska.
Born in Israel in 1951, Gluska is influenced not only by traditional Jewish concepts but also by modern art. Through his paintings, the artist has created a new abstract language to depict the landscape of Israel. First, he mixes iodine, pigments and paint preservatives with water in a bathtub at an exact temperature. Then he dips large sheets of paper into the mixture and, by maneuvering the mixture on the papa, creates views of elemental landscapes forged by tectonic forces, visions of sandstorms and floods that have left their imprint on the deserted land.
All paintings on display are in black and white with more or less the same composition. In Gluska's own words, “These are not the depiction of an identifiable landscape, but of views that are the fruit of imagination.” Through the works, we learn how the artist's identity is formed by country, culture and language.
