It’s hot out there and we’re all feelin’ it. Although Beijing offers so much to do it’s hard to find the energy to do anything when the heats zaps it from you. Here’s a list of things to do this week to beat the heat!
Monday, July 14th: Celebrate Bastille Day with some delicious French cuisine. Happy Bastille Day! Today is the French National Day, a day to commemorate the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on the July 14th 1789, as well as the Fête de la Fédération on the July 14th 1790.
Why not celebrate by taking the family to a nice dinner at the Parnas Restaurant. Although slightly pricey, the meals are cooked by 5 star chefs. Spoil yourself with from delicious french cuisine! On the other hand, if you’re not up for forking out 400RMB+ on a meal then head over to Crepanini, in Sanlitun. The restaurant serves paninis, sweet and savory crepes, ice cream and milkshakes. The Riviera and Bretonne crepes make great lunches, and for dessert I recommend trying the banana-chocolate crepe. It comes smothered in chocolate - amazing!
Tuesday, July 15th: Take a visit to the Science and Technology museum. Rev up your children’s interest in science while also being in an air conditioned facility. This museum is 5 floors and is guaranteed to please everyone in the family.
Wednesday, July 16th: Art Classes for Children by UCCA - Entice your child’s creative side and take them over to the UCCA Creative Studio. Choose from a 3-day art camp, or a personal tutorial from professional arts teachers. Families are also invited to attend the popular weekend artist workshops.
All sessions use various forms of art, from paint, crayons to other media. There will also be interactive storytelling, where children will be able to develop skills in reading, speaking, and art-making.

Thursday, July 17th: Take the family for a swim in Dongdan Swimming pool. Many pools in China are stuffed to the rim with people and the waters give a nice murky hue. However, this pool is clean and well managed. They also have a snack bar next to the pool for you to grab a bite before taking a dive. The best time to go to beat the crowds is in the late afternoon. Lunch time is the busiest time.
//Open: 10am-9.30pm daily (last entry 9pm). Admission 50RMB, Telephone 6523 1241, address A2 Dahua Lu, Dongcheng district
Friday, July 18th: TGIF! If you have been working all week and couldn’t spend time with the kids, tonight is the night. Why not make some strawberry popsicles for dessert? A great way to spend time with the kids, and getting them interested in cooking. Also why not hit up The Bookworm? They just released some great summer time reads for children. Check them out here:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney, Runaway by Alice Munro, and Lucky Peach.
