It seems body issues and insecurities are only publicized for the females out there. Dove has had a series of powerful and popular campaigns showing “real” women, demonstrating the sharp contrast between “normal” bodies and the impossibly thin, yet fit ideal that is conveyed throughout the media. Although us women take a lot of heat from the media, we sometimes forget that men do too.
Men are often told to “be a man!” and “suck it up!” when they get hurt. Showing their feelings or being sensitive can associate them with being "girly" or weak.
Men, just like women, are also subject to beauty standards. Women are more likely to be seen as sexual objects in advertising, whereas as men are seen as strong, husky and buff. They tend to have toned muscles and have chiseled abs, leading to their own uniques sets of body image issues.
Here are some great ads showing “real” men, in all of their awesome shapes and sizes.
