A recent report has revealed the sheer impact that work stress has on our bodies. So much so that work stress has been linked to a 23 percent increased risk of heart attacks and deaths from coronary heart disease.
Interestingly, the risk is even smaller for a smoker or one leading a sedentary lifestyle. Job insecurity, dealing with a difficult co-worker, being unable to change a stressful situation at work are all different types of job strains.
Working in any profession can lead to strain, however it is more common to see it in lower skilled workers. Doctors who have a lot of decision-making in their jobs would be less likely to have job strain than someone working on a busy factory production line.
Although work stress is unavoidable, you can change how you deal with the stress in a positive way. After a particularly stressful day at work, rather than slumping into the couch, switching on the TV and munching a bag of Doritos, take a walk outside. Go for a run. Meet up with a friend. Listen to music. Find a healthier way to unwind. The choices you make can drastically reduce the effect your work has on your life.
