A recent Weibo post of a portion of text from an antiquated (and by that, we mean from 2004) Chinese sex education textbook issued in Jiangxi has gone viral and illicited some negative responses from netizens.
According to the BBC, the 21st Century Publishing Group textbook issued to high school seniors describes girls who have premarital sex as 'cheap' and that partaking in such activities has 'tremendous negative psychological and physical impact on girls.'
The cherry on top? "Girls do not increase the love they receive from boys by sacrificing their bodies, but rather are seen as 'degraded' by their 'conquerors'." And, "As a result, sexual relations can cause women to lose love."
The use of quotes for the words "degraded" and "conquerers" have been used as defense by the publishing company to justify the controversial content of the book. Because if you put it in quotes you don't really mean it, right?
"I think whoever wrote this book is 'cheap'. I put quotation marks so I guess it's not insulting too," commented Weibo user "Foodie Who Likes to Eat Fish."
The education department of Jiangxi has been quick to say that the books will be revised.
