Regulations for synthetic running tracks are currently under way in Shanghai after a series of unfortunate incidents involving children falling ill at local elementary schools across China.
This is not the first 'track scare' in Shanghai. Last October over 200 students were moved from a kindergarten in Minhang district after developing symptoms including rashes and coughing.
Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau is working with the Shanghai Education Commission on developing and impleneting standards that will cover both materials and installation methods, according to Shanghai Daily. Currently, there are systems in place to regulate track materials and production, but it is possible that they have been neglected.
This accouncement comes shortly after an official investigation was launched into local primary schools in Beijing after reports surfaced of children falling ill shortly after the installation of a new track. It was discovered that the synthetic racetrack was emitting poisonous gases and causing children to fall ill, with sympoms including nosebleeds, coughs and lightheadedness.
