May 7 was a hot and sunny day in Shenzhen, perfect for the fourth annual BCIS American Fair – which boasted 45 booths providing a wide-range of useful information, food, games and prizes.
BCIS teachers and staff arrived early the morning of the event to get their booths set up, so that when guests arrived the venue would resemble a ‘US dream-land.’ The layout of the venue was broken into nine ‘American geographical sections’, including the Gulf States, Islands, Midwest, New England, Northeast, Pacific Northwest, West, Southeast and Southwest.
With the guidance of teachers and teaching assistants, children were able to partake in a variety of American-style carnival games, as well as traditional arts and crafts. The most popular of these activities were the walk-a-thon, hamster ball, Lei making, sand art and baking contests, according to event organizers.
In addition to being an all-around good time, the event also served as a fundraiser – with all profits going to the Concordia Education & Welfare Foundation. The organization aims to improve the lives of Longyuan Primary School students, who study at an impoverished rural school in China.
