Edward, Renee, Purity, Julia, Amml and Raghd from the Canadian International School of Guangzhou sat down with Urban Family to discuss what fashion means to them, their personal style, their fashion mentors and why they look up to them.
Renee, aged 11 - Grade 6
Fashion to me means wearing the clothes that work for you and what is popular today. I like the way that Emilie de Ravin, who plays Belle in Maleficent, carries herself and the clothes she wears, like longer skirts. My style is more fancy, but I also like to be comfortable when I'm home. I don't think that style lasts forever, it will change as you grow older.
Edward, aged 11 - Grade 6
Fashion is not about looking good but about showing your creativity. I consider my mom to be my mentor when it comes to fashion because when I can't make a decision on what to wear or what is suitable, she always has the right answer. I like casual, simple styles, but on special occasions, I opt for nice denim pants and long T-shirts – that is what I really like to wear. I agree that fashion trends will change, but your style will always be the same.
Purity, aged 7 - Grade 4
I like to express my feeling with clothes and no one should feel bad about your own fashion. Zendaya, the singer and dancer, has great fashion, and she follows who she is. I feel like my style is more like comfortable and tomboyish, but I still want to feel like a girl. The older you get, I think you forget about the older fashions that were popular, but my style will probably always be the same – it's who I am.
Julia, aged 8 - Grade 3
Fashion simply is the clothes that I wear and what others wear. I look up to my mom because she likes to dress up and looks beautiful. I like dresses, mostly, wearing hairpins and lots of color. A colorful style is my style. I agree that style is eternal – your style will always be the same, but fashion today may not be the fashion of tomorrow.
Amml, aged 10 - Grade 5
Fashion means dressing the way you want and choosing different styles of outfits. My mom chooses lots of colors that match, those that mix and match, and knows what looks good on me. She always looks for that perfect combination. I feel that the style of matching colors will never fade, but the clothes that you wear will show your individuality.
Raghd, aged 10 - Grade 5
I like clothes that are comfortable and with more dark colors, so that's the fashion that works for me. My friends and I talk about different fashions, so I look up to their advice. They like to wear fancy and colorful clothes, which is what I like, too. I think that the fashion of colors will always change, but my style and the type of clothes that I wear will never change.
This is a collection of poems written by our young students in the PRD. Enjoy!
