The city of Shanghai has decided to conduct a research project that will study approximately 20,000 students at 20 local and primary schools. The data that is collected will help provide a new foundation for the restructuring of physical education departments, according to Shanghai Daily.
For some, the mandatory physical education class required when they were in primary school was the worst class that was ever created, while for others it was the best class of the day, because it allowed people to play outside and maybe even develop a lifelong passion for a sport.
Even though students are required to take these courses, the question remains: does childhood participation in sports create a better foundation for children growing up? The data collected from this research could provide invaluable information about a possible correlation between positive and negative childhood development and the amount of sports that children are required to participate in at school. The data will also provide important information regarding the effects of sports on the academic performances of children, as well as their overall physical health.
