Halloween has just passed. If you are asked what you are most afraid of, what will your answer be? Some may say ‘darkness’ or ‘monsters’ or what about ‘spiders’ or ‘clowns’?
When it comes to children, things become interesting as their answers can be bizarre and hilarious. Following are 20 things children have said they are most afraid of, along with their parents’ remarks. Can you figure out why these are so scary for children?
1. Mannequins
“My 3 year old boy is terrified of plastic mannequins. Every time he sees one in a store, he will start murmuring, ‘It’s not real…I’m not scared…’”
2. Sandwiches
“I can’t believe my daughter is afraid of sandwiches. She has no problem eating one piece of bread, however, when two pieces are put together, no matter what’s in between, she backs off instantly as if she has seen a monster.”
3. “Man in Orange”
“For a long time, my 4 year old kept telling us that there was a man in orange staring at him every night and he was too afraid to fall sleep. When I stayed with him to check the situation, I couldn’t spot anyone. Then, one night I asked him to point out the man in orange, and I found out it was actually a lamppost near his room.”
4. E.T.
“For many years, my daughter swore that E.T. lived in our garage and refused to go there by herself.”
5. Stickers
“My son is afraid of stickers. You really should see how he freaks out when someone puts stickers on his back where he can’t reach it.”
6. The Little Mermaid
“Ever since I told my daughter if she didn’t put on her Little Mermaid pajamas that she would turn into a mermaid, she can’t help shivering when she hears the word.”
7. Mini-Mi
“My little sister is so afraid of the antagonist from Austin Powers. She even believes that his secret lair is right under her bed.”
8. Flush Toilets
“My daughter was so afraid of flushing toilets that she couldn’t use one until she was 5 years old. She believed something sinister would come out along with the water after using it.”
9. Mr. Bluelight
“Five years ago, my son and I went to a supermarket and came face-to-face with Mr. Bluelight. The mascot reached out for a hug and my boy was so afraid that he instantly shrieked and ran away. Now you can still tell he is nervous when he sees a mascot.”
10. Watermelons
“I can’t figure out why my son is so terrified of watermelons. Every time we pass a fruits store and see watermelons piling up, he can’t help shaking.”
11. Winnie-the-Pooh
“My 4 year old had the same nightmare for several nights in a row for no reason. In the dream, he was hit and kicked by Winnie-the-Pooh.”
12. Happy Birthday Song
“My son is somehow afraid of the song ‘Happy Birthday’. We can’t even sing it at his birthday. He suggests we sing something else instead.”
13. JFK’s murderer
“Ever since my son watched the documentary about JFK, he can no longer go upstairs alone because he thinks Lee Harvey Oswald (the murderer of JFK) is waiting for him somewhere on the 2nd floor.”
14. Butterflies
“My daughter has an ineffable fear of butterflies. Once I took her to an insect museum to see different kinds of butterflies. She still blames me for ruining her afternoon.”
15. Napkins
“My daughter is terrified of napkins. If someone puts one on her table during a meal, she will instantly run away.”
16. Fallen leaves
“I have two daughters, and both of them are afraid of leaves. If they see even one leaf on the ground they will do their utmost to take a detour.”
17. A balloon
“When my son was 18 months old, I decided to give him a balloon with a smile on it. That night I put the balloon in his room to give him a surprise, and 10 minutes later I heard screaming. I rushed in and found my son sitting up with his eyes wide open. Then I realized the balloon had deflated and the smile had become quite creepy.”

“My 8 year old son is afraid of Michael Jackson’s ghost. According to him, the ghost only haunts kids.”
19. Baby dolls
“All my little ones are afraid of baby dolls. To be honest, I sometimes find these dolls spooky, too.”

“My stepdaughter always wakes up at midnight on Christmas Eve. She fears that Santa Claus will bite her toes off during the sleep.”
