As one of the most used items of furniture for parents, baby beds are closely connected with babies’ safety. Therefore, you would hope that baby bed quality would be of the utmost imprortance. However, a bed branded Labi Baby was found to be a safety risk by inspectors from Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (SMBQTS) a week ago.
The bed, designed for children under age 3, was sold in No.1 Yaohan Department Store in Pudong. It failed the test because one side of the bed couldn’t close automatically after lifting it up and pushing it. Clearly, it was against the related requirements.
“Although baby beds seem simple in structure, there are many strict and specified requirements regarding to the safety of them,” says Lu Wei, inspector of SMBQTS. “For instance, the gap between the rails should be between 45 and 65 millimeters.”
Later, inspectors went to the warehouse of Labi Baby in Zhoupu area and confiscated thirteen beds of the same batch. It is said that the beds are sold in more than ten shopping malls across Shanghai. There are no reports of injury for now.
In order to avoid purchasing such baby beds with safety risks, here we have prepared a few tips for you.
1. Appearance isn’t everything
Parents may prefer baby beds with complex patterns since such beds look pretty and fabulous. However, they can be a danger, since infants, especially the naughty ones, may easily get their body parts stuck in a hollowed-out decoration. Also, the beds shouldn’t have sharp edges. Parents should touch it themselves first before making up their minds.
2. The more colorful, the worse
Many new parents might like to choose a baby bed with bright colors to fit the color of the baby room. Nevertheless, they are not a good idea because the brighter the color of the bed is, the more lead compound and heavy metal the paint contains. Therefore, pick a baby bed with less paint if possible.
3. The mattress is also vital
Parents tend to purchase baby beds with soft mattresses considering that hard ones are uncomfortable for babies to sleep on. The truth is that the soft ones are also not ideal choices since they are bad for kids’ skeletal development. When it comes to the choice of mattress, it should be neither too soft nor too hard.
