Anybody who’s been in Guangzhou for even the shortest amount of time is probably familiar with Tomatoes Pizzeria, that 24-hour haven of Italy’s favorite gastronomic export. Looking to break into a new market, they owners just launched a brand-new outlet that’s specializing in made-to-order sandwiches. Occupying a long-empty lot nearby the pizzeria on Jianshe Liu Malu, Tomatoes Express works along the lines of Subway, with a counter displaying meat and vegetable fillings for diners to choose from. It’s a small space that’s been renovated simply with parquet flooring and caramel-colored tables, the idea being that most patrons will have their eats to go, whether it’s a roast beef sarnie or tuna panini. The bread is all made in-house and six-inchers sell from between RMB20 and RMB26. There are also some salad options if you’re avoiding carbs or prefer the green stuff. If Tomatoes Express follows the same path to success as the pizzerias, expect to see more popping up a street near you later this year.
