A six year old Yunnan boy was so afraid of being late to school that he walked there at 10pm the night before.
The boy, Xing Yu is a grade two student at Nagu Central School. He was found in the early hours of the morning of November 26 by a villager who took him to the local police station. Xing told police he had been waiting outside of school for four hours on his own because his family couldn’t afford an alarm clock and he was afraid he would oversleep.
Xing shares a tiny room with his factory-worker father and middle-school student sister; his mother abandoned the family several years ago. The boy’s father was at work the night he decided to leave the house with just a plastic bag to carry his books. He walked three kilometres (1.8 miles) before arriving at the school.
Police were able to contact Xing’s father and drop the little boy home. The officer who helped Xing was so saddened by his story that the next day he bought the boy an alarm clock and some stationary.
