We are currently in the year of the horse. Horses are seen as prosperous, strong animals. Those born during this year are cheerful, perceptive, talented but also stubborn. They flourish in large crowds and have an active social life. They are popular and enjoy working hard. However on Feb. 19, 2015 the year of the sheep begins. Superstitious Chinese couples are desperate to have their child in time before the dreaded year of the sheep.
What’s so bad about being born in the year of the sheep you ask? According to the Chinese zodiac, sheep are seen as weak creatures, raised for nothing more than slaughter. Babies born in this year are likely to grow up to be followers rather than leaders. They have a grim one in 10 chance of finding happiness, will probably face divorce and will have very little luck in business.
Characteristics of those born in the year of the sheep are generous, shy, weak-willed, polite, and kind-hearted. They have special sensitivity to art and beauty, faith in a certain religion and tend to be introverted. They may be gentle, compassionate, passive and loyal. Which, to some could be considered virtues, but to others these characteristics will set a person up for failure. According to some, those born in the year of the sheep will never be able succeed in today’s “dog-eat-dog” world.
Overall there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac and each one has it’s own virtues and faults. The best year to be born is the year of the dragon, followed by the tiger and then the horse.
Fertility doctors have have been swamped with couples hoping to conceive before the year of the horse ends. Some doctors worry we may see a spike in abortions later this year from couples who missed the horse-year cutoff.
Officials at the China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention are trying desperately to do what they can to eliminate the myth of bad luck for those born in Year of the Sheep.
