A family dispute has made headlines in Kunming, Yunnan province, after a woman decided to eat her grandson’s pet goldfish when he moved away from home.
The boy’s father, surnamed Wang, said that his son had cared for the fish for years, but his grandmother had always dismissed them as “wasteful”, according to the Kunming Evening News.
"My mother was very opinionated about the goldfish. She thought they were a waste of water and money," Wang explained to reporters, adding that she only allowed the fish because she loved her grandson so much.
However, the grandson recently moved abroad for his studies, leaving the goldfish defenceless against his grandmother, who waited until Wang was on a business trip to seize her moment.
When Wang returned, she confessed to roasting the fish and eating them, even adding that they were “actually very tasty”.
Wang initially panicked that the meal may have been harmful to the old woman’s health, but local experts explained that most of the small aquarium fish are not toxic. However, eating them is still not recommended.
